Amateurs lace up their gloves for Round 2 of Marciano tournament

BROCKTON — Round 2 of the annual Rocky Marciano Tournament of Champions for amateur fighters in New England will be held at the Shaw's Center on Oct. 12.
The first night of the tourney was held Sept. 28 at the Shaw's center, the same location for round two. The last of the three-night tourney will be held Oct. 21 at Campanelli Stadium.
The tournament, now in its fifth year, has been held at various locations, including Raynham Dog Track, the Brockton Fairgrounds, Roseland Ballroom in Taunton and Revere.
Tournament organizer Mike Cappiello earlier called the new location a "high-class place" and predicted the tournament will be good.
During the second night of the tourney on Friday, there will be a dinner to benefit the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame and a comedy show to go with the fights at the Shaw's Center.
The final night of boxing will be held, weather permitting, on Oct. 21 at Campanelli Stadium. Should the weather not cooperate, it will be moved to the Shaw's Center.
Campanelli Stadium hosted a pro boxing card that was televised on ESPN in summer 2005, and the Brockton Rox organization was looking to bring boxing back to their home.
The fighters in the tournament will represent gyms from Brockton, West Bridgewater, Springfield, Worcester, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Maine.
The bouts will be in the sub-novice division (for fighters who have had no more than four fights), novice division (five to 10 fights) and open class. Fighters must be at least 17.
The cost for the dinner-comedy show-boxing event at the Shaw's Center on Friday is $65 with all proceeds going to the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame.
