The # 1 song in the U.S.A. was "Medley" by "Stars On 45" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bGQ1-Gmoso
Interesting was that Billboard did not list this song simply as "Medley" but actually listed it as it was printed on the 45 rpm, which was as follows:
Medley Intro "Venus"/Sugar Sugar/No Reply/I'll Be Back/Drive My Car/Do You Want To Know A Secret/we Can Work It Out/I Should Have Known Better/Nowhere Man/You're Going To Lose That Girl/Stars On 45.
This 11 song medley holds the record for longest title for a # 1 song.
Amazing!
How bout the rest of the Top 10?
# 2 Bette Davis Eyes, Kim Carnes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPOIS5taqA8

(ironically 18 years earlier in 1963 "Sukiyaki" by Kyu Sakamoto was the # 1 song in the U.S.A. the very same week 6/22/63 (3 weeks @ # 1)

  • Great chart, lots of classics. Even tho this was before MTV it's pretty 80s.

Hey I just noticed something with these '80/81 episodes. When Casey is reading the songs, they don't have it playing in the background, but it's got that trancey music instead.

  • @JPMcFly1985 That trancey music used to creep me out.

  • Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes" had fallen out of the top spot after five weeks at #1 that week, but it returned to #1 for four more weeks the following June 28.

  • @pythonfan1

the commercial music starting at 8:42 is the best sound on here. i like it a lot. damn was 1981 a sorry year for music . mid 1980s new wave and rock and the late 1970s disco were so much better. 1981 to and most of 1982 wa sa dead zone in music as far as i am concerned. it still sucks 30 years later.

  • i liked kim carnes and star on 45 but the rest of these top 40 songs of 1981 are the reason i REALLY missed the disco of the late 1970s. i was listening the pretenders in 1981 and grace slick's welcome to the wrecking ball. this music is total crap except for REO who i hated then but came to like by the 1990s. i came to like jesse' girl too. the james song is ok too. it was out before black music became crap.

  • This is what we listened to when I graduated. Truth is most new these songs but we listened to a bunch of other stuff.

  • This aired the week my folks got wired for Cable Television in 1981.

  • There is something wrong when Stars on 45 knocks Kim Carnes out of #1.

  • My favorite: Jessie's Girl at #10!
