Rapaport, April 21, 2010: Diamonds Sell Big at Sotheby's

Sotheby's New York Magnificent Jewels sale, which was held April 20, 2010, totaled $34,662,338, sold 84 percent by lot, and featured a number of rare diamonds. Sothebys combined sales of Magnificent Jewels and Always in Style, a one-owner jewelry collection, achieved $39,608,676.


In this broadcast, take a look at the following top lots:

- A fancy vivid yellow necklace, 100.17tcw, set with cut-cornered squares and modified brilliant-cut fancy vivid yellow diamonds sold for $3,554,500.

A beautiful 7.67ct diamond ring, cut-cornered rectangular modified brilliant-cut diamond -- fancy intense pinkish orange -- and framed and flanked by rounds and mounted in platinum sold for $3,106,500.

- The panther themed wristwatch from Cartier, circa 1985, featuring buff-top sapphire segments and eyes of pear-shaped emeralds sold for $686,500, well above estimate. The panther opens to reveal a rectangular dial pave-set with single cut stones.

- Ear-pendants set with pear-shaped diamonds of 13.16, 11.83, 9.33, and 8.74 carats and featured center clusters of pear-shaped diamonds, of 20.85 total carat weight, sold for $1,058,500.

- A 1925 Tiffany & Co. bracelet boasting octagonal and rectangular step-cut emeralds of about 39.60tcw sold above estimate for $650,500. The stones are spaced by square emerald-cut diamonds of 9.50tcw and set in platinum.

- A cushion shaped ruby ring of 8.66cts, flanked by single-cut diamonds and mounted in platinum, sold well above the high presale estimate for $2,098,500.


Christie's New York will hold its Jewels: The New York Sale on April 22, so this video broadcast features a preview of top lots from the auction including the Catherine the Great emerald brooch and a 39.5 carat Emperor Maximilian diamond ring.
