The seven towers in Ballymun were built between 1966 and 1969. In the 1960s planners and architects thought the best way to house many people very quickly was to build high towers with as many flats in them as possible.

This video is designed as a resource for primary and post-primary students up to Junior Certificate.

  • Sooo many memories of family/friends.... Ballymun may change but one thing 4 sure is, you'll never change the people here!!

  • @121Bollox Saying that though... I WOULD NOT CHANGE ONE SINGLE SECOND OF LIVING THERE!! I made friends for LIFE, would not be the person I am, and would NEVER have seen architecture from the perspective of Le Corbusier's dream... Cities in the Sky!! One of the '60's BIGGEST fuck-ups that the WORLD has embraced!

GREAT VID, but a little too 'clinical'?? Thanks for posting, mate!

  • My english teacher, who is a jesuit, was talking about his life. A lot of people in my school would have the wrong perception about there, and we thought he would too. But he told us they were the nicest, friendliest people he had ever met. When he moved in, the neighbours came over, greeted him and told him tips about the flat.

  • Lots of fields and trees and places to play...... It was,nt that bad ! ...you just had to watch out for the odd gang, keep alert.

  • No trees or anywhere to play?........Oh come on ! ... the place was surrounded by fields and trees !..... We had great fun playing there ! .

  • hello, my name is Sophie FLYNN, I lived in Ballymun from 1977 to 1983. I am french, and I keep great memories of my years in Ceannt and Conolly towers. I was working with mothers and children in the playschool Dysneyland. I had 2 boys Yannic and Colm. I live near Paris. Give me news if you remember me!!!!!

  • I'm American and never heard of Ballymun until today, when I found out it was the setting for U2's song "Running To Stand Still." I always figured the lyrics had something to do with drug addiction, probably heroin. I thought the "seven towers" were just some sort of image. Did a little research & found out about Ballymun's seven high-rises. Never too old to learn something new...

A lot of American "public housing" projects of the 60s and 70s had the same problems and ended up the same way.

  • What area did you live in womanbot.Like all areas ballymun had its quite and no so quite areas.I was in ballymun from 69 until early 2000.Its was a good place to live in up until the late 70s and then drugs started taking a hold in some areas.I was in sean mc dermott tower on the 12th floor until about 81.then i moved to poppintree where my family still lives. The video is very selective in what it says.It never says when the swimming pool was built (1974).

  • Finally learned to what the Seven Towers in this mysterious U2 song refer to!

I see seven towers but I only see one way out! Totally makes sense now... Thanks for uploading!
