Southampton University Time Lapse

In 1986 I was a member of Wessex Films at Southampton University. I made this film on Super 8mm, with the camera shutter controlled from a BBC Micro. It's a day in the life of Southampton University, compressed into a couple of minutes. The transfer to video and subsequent digital capture have lost some of the quality - sorry about that.

Thanks for posting that! It's nicely put together, and shows the contrast between old and new, both in terms of the location and the technology available for this kind of effect. I love the last shot, where it slows down to normal pace again.

You might be interested to know that Wessex Films is currently in the process of making an updated version of this timelapse, playing homage to the original of course.

@macronencer the club only reformed a year or so ago (so I've been told), there's only about 20 or so members so we're a smallish club now given the previous reputation. Most of what has been done is on youtube anyway now... searching for Wessexfilms will lead you to it, as it appears youtube won't allow me to post the link to their actual page.

@chopyaedoff Wow, just watched the 2011 promo - fantastic stuff!  Technology is certainly much improved over the Super 8 days of the 1980s...

Wow, Im actually looking for some old super 8mm footage of Eastleigh and Southampton, going towards a film project!

@Stevebarrettfilm Sorry, I seem to have missed your comment when you posted it originally, just seen it... Wessex Films in the 1980s shot a great deal of Super8 footage of Southampton: I did have some of it, which was transferred to VHS; but unfortunately I lost the digitised file I made, in a disk crash. :( I might still have the VHS tape somewhere, but probably I can't help you in the near future, sorry...

Yes, it's really different nowadays - I still live in Southampton so I pass the place sometimes...

BBC Micros? I was there in 83-86, and I remember them well - in fact I could tell you a few stories of hacking, hijack programs and very silly terminal emulators that played the Hallelujah Chorus :| The things I got up to...
