Rachel's pony, Park Rebel (or Rebby Roo as we call him!) turned "sour" and was refusing to jump... so we sent him on a long holiday over in eastern Norway near Melsomvik to give him a break from competitions..

For three months, he was looked after by Rachel's good friend Mari and Mari's aunt, Tonje. Reb has had a very long rest (out every day in a field), good food, sunshine... hmmm, a horse's life sounds good at times!

Mari started training him and before bringing him home, we thought we'd give him a run out in a couple of classes at a district competition at Melsom.

After two unsuccessful attempts to get him to complete a round, we gave him a third chance in a 1.00 metre class on the Sunday and with a lot of encouragement from Mari, he made it round without refusing. Even better - they came first!

This video shows him being exercised on the Saturday evening and then the 1.00 metre class on the Sunday morning. This class was feil og stil (for non-Norwegians, this was judged on the number of faults and riding style).

Many many thanks are due to the following people:

Tonje and Mari for looking after Rebel while he's been on holiday.

Peter Flam - who very kindly allowed Mari and Rachel to jump Rebel over some of the fences in the main arena after the competition had finished on the Saturday evening.

The judges at Melsom for allowing us to try relaxing Rebel as he went in to the arena (no announcement, no audible start signal and no music).

Rebel is now back home with us... but in a different stable. New video coming soon (I hope) showing his new surroundings!

  • yay hes turning into a good boy again! :) i cant get over how diff he looks :O hes stunning! well he always has been xD but hes sooooo gorgeous :) great vid..loved the music xx

  • Thanks Grace! He looks different because his coat has grown so long. Rachel plans on giving him a haircut soon; that's when he'll look really nice again!

It's too soon to say if he's turning into a good boy - we're keeping our fingers crossed and with lots of work and training, maybe he'll come back. If he doesn't come good for the rest of the year (Rachel's last pony riding year), she plans riding him in horse classes from next year onwards.

  • I love this pony so back; I'm glad he's got his confidence back in the ring.

  • Hi ridingruffian - well, we're not sure he has got his confidence back totally. It's going to take a bit of time before we can get him jumping consistently again. We're hoping he can still make a comeback.

  • good for you for keeping faith in him, alot of people would just sell their horse, but you stuck with him :]

lol he sure was a "rebel!" XD i couldn't help myself :D

  • Hi showjumpergurl - he certainly has lived up to his name!!

  • Great video! He's gorgeous! It's wonderful that you guys put so much time and effort into him. You let him work through his problems :) Many owners don't do that!

  • i know that problem...my horse had it, too...but just because she didn´t want it =)

she always wanna do what she wants *hehe*

cool, that rebel jumps again!! congratulations!

  • .............................

  • I had the same problem with one of my lads. Tried repeatedly to get him back into the event season and he wasnt impressed so pulled him out and concentrated on other. Stepped him up after the break into horse classes and he's been excellent since-won 4 different classes!

Always hope!! Just takes time and lot of patience like you have been doing!

  • Absolutely gorgeous pony!

  • omg this sounds just like my horse! out of no where he started refusing the simplest of jumps even a pole on the ground. Rebel looked really nice. He looks like the kinda of pony that every girl wants :D its really nice you guys didnt give up on him i know a lot of people who would :( good luck with getting his confidence back :DD

  • Rebel is such a lovely horse. I hope he'll find jumping amusing again. I wish I had a pony like Rebel when I see your videos. But I have to be happy with my little mare...
