Using a tried and tested design by Walter Segal, Centre for Alternative Techonolgy's Professional Diploma in Architecture students are building a new classroom in CAT's wild woodland across the valley. The building will provide space for CAT's Biology and Education departments to give classes on ecology, biodiversity and woodland management.

Students from the Architecture Part 2 Diploma helped in the construction as part of the practical part of their course. Walter Segal's designs pioneered the self-build movement and are being used in community developments across the country, including the Wildlife Trust's Education Centre in Peckham and the CHASE Community Centre in Nottingham. CAT has many Walter Segal inspired buildings on site including the Intro Hut and the Self-build, used here to illustrate the benefits and simplicity in self-build design.

CAT also offers a short course in Timber Frame Self-Build starting at the end of September. The five day course will cover designs by Walter Segal providing the student with a skill base ready to begin their own self-build project.
