  • Hey steve, I've tried lingq for Japanese, but i really like having a transcript along with the L2 text. I haven't been able to find many lessons with english translations. Are they hiding somewhere or are translations like a premium feature. The reason i find translations so invaluable is that I don't like to assume that what I believe I'm understanding is right, when i may be totally off base( like how combined particles can change the meaning of a word/phrase). Also makes for some good Srs'ing

  • @Hiltongroupie It depends whether the member who uploaded the content provided a translation. I find that my albeit imperfect understanding of what I am reading, or listening to, is preferable to a translation. I focus on acquiring the words I need to get through the text. I know things will get clearer over time. I think it is counter productive to worry about how accurately I understand something. I prefer to move one and get more exposure to the language.

  • Steve, have you ever visited SCOLA's site? We have a great deal of interesting content for more than 175 languages, and individuals can access this information for as little as $10 a month! See our SCOLA channel for some interesting content examples.

  • @SCOLAOne I just had a look and it seems interesting. We would like to use some of this material at LingQ. We only need audio with matching transcript, and can also show videos. All content would include a link back to the SCOLA site. If this is not possible we will at least let our learners know about the site. Whom should I contact at SCOLA?

  • @g1981c You don't know anything for a fact, you have opinions. Kids spend 2 years listening before they start speaking. If you have a large vocabulary in Spanish and German, so why not just start speaking. The more speak the better you will get. Driving a car is not like speaking a language, who ever said it was.

  • @g1981c g191c, your opinions are ridiculous. Every time you write something, you show how much of an amateur you are on the subject of language learning.

  • Is it tough for you to remember different languages as you switch between them? It scares me to try and learn more than one. I plan to learn one well, and see if I could handle another one.

  • Thank you Steve good points. Do you have some good suggestions for South American Spanish content online? Regards, Brian Leslie

  • I admire your desire to learn about another country in the language of it's people. It's not enough to simply learn how to function to a certain degree in another country, but to try and understand the wants, needs, hopes, effectively the mentality and perspective of a nation's people through cultural relativism. At least, this is what I hope to do now in the beginnings of learning a second language.

    Pura vida!

  • This video made me smile.

When trvlling in countries that I enjoy, as the later one, Turkey, I'm caught in a continuous struggle in understanding things written on walls, newspapers, ads, and whatever comes to my hands. In my case, it's not about the lrning of a specific lang., but the intrst drivn by curiosity in mlticltrlism and foreign langs and the pleasure that comes after being able to make up what's written in there. When it's about cntent, things get cnsiderably easyier, if not flowless.

  • Your point about not understanding key phrases when first starting to learn is so right. a few years in to learning spanish i still find it difficult to grasp a couple subtle phrases/ auxillary type words that are used in so many scenarios, but its a great feeling when i finally get a grasp on it and know when to use it instead of necessarily learning it 100%

  • where is the video with the conversation you had with Luka??? @lingosteve

  • Thanks Steve, Yes I listen to lectures here on subjects I know the vocabulary; I then write down words I don't know-

  • @Nemofiy amen to that. That sums it up perfectly.(lol)
