Yasur volcano has great significance for the kustom and Jon Frum people of Tanna. Yasur volcano is constantly changing. Following cyclone Uma in 1986 the lake (Siwi) appeared and the volcano was marked by a constant dense plume that settled across the island and burnt the vegetation. There were frequent very noisy eruptions. By 1997 lake Siwi had almost disappeared and there were very explosive gaseous eruptions and the plume was small. Indeed it had been reported that one tourist had been badly injured by a lava bomb. From other videos recorded in more recent years it seems that the volcano has become much more active with lava eruptions. A unique place. Apologies for my occassional exuberant comment spoiling the sound show!
