This week on The Beasley Allen Report, host Gibson Vance welcomes Navan Ward, a fellow attorney at Beasley Allen. Navan works in the firm's Mass Torts section, which handles cases involving dangerous drugs and defective medical devices. Navan talks with Gibson about cases involving metal-on-metal hip implants. These implants have a metal ball that fits into a metal socket implanted in the hip. Some of these cases address specific hip implants manufactured by DePuy Orthopaedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson. DePuy recalled its ASR XL Acetabular system hip implants in August 2010 after it was discovered that patients with these implants had a much higher than usual rate of revision surgeries due to device failure and problems such as pain, swelling, trouble walking and hip dislocation. The recall involved 93,000 hip implants worldwide. In addition, Beasley Allen is looking into claims of problems with metal-on-metal hip implants made by other manufacturers. People with defective metal-on-metal hip implants also can suffer a type of blood poisoning called metallosis, which occurs when metal ion particles flake off the device and enter the bloodstream. Navan has been selected to serve on the Plaintiffs Steering Committee for multidistrict litigation in cases involving the recalled hip implants, as well as cases involving Pinnacle hip implants, also manufactured by DePuy, which were not recalled.

  • My husband was crippled by a DePuy Pinnacle metal-on-metal hip replacement. Surgery was in December 2008, and he never recovered. Besides always present unbearable pain, his levels of toxic metal poisoning are 300times higher than normal. It is only a matter of time when other organs like kidneys, liver, and other get effected. DePuy and large parts of the medical community downplay all the issues, and delay legal procedures as good as they can. Only hope: DePuy Pinnacle MDL Case in Dallas/TX
