  • Thanks for the video, didn't really know much about deep half guard. However a question is I may ... what's stopping them spinning to reverse mount and going for a leg lock?

  • @KJGould Good question. This is just a short clip from a longer piece on the DHG where I go into that in more detail. The condensed notes are that the hand on the hip stops, or at least slows down his spin, and foot positioning also makes it very difficult for him to spin. If the front instep is under his leg then it effectively hides that knee from the kneebar. If the rear instep is under then you can lift up as he spins and take his back. Hope this helps

  • Stephan, I love your videos, you explain things very well. My problem with the deep half guard is that my free arm always gets underhooked and since i'm not a super strong guy I sometimes get subbed on that arm. Any tips on how to keep my opponent off balanced enough that he has to keep his hands on the floor instead of attacking my arm?

  • @Scarface8381 I think your question shows that you're on the right track. If he's unbalanced enough then he can't attack your arm effectively. In addition to that try this: a) glue that elbow to the floor, and against the side of your body, at all times, and b) if he starts hunting for it (even if he locks on a Kimura) then tuck the hand of that arm under his leg - hard to explain in words, but it works really well

  • @BIGRSO10 It's a good question. Shorter guys generally seem to keep the hand on the trapped leg. Taller guys ... like Stephan ... often end up underhooking the far leg more, or grabbing the belt over the butt.

  • might be a silly question but arent you hooking wrong leg arent you suppose to have your hands around the same leg you have in your half not the opposite as you where showing. i only ask because thats how jeff glover does it.

  • Great movie thanks a lot for a help :)

  • @vatoXlocos I believe it was the mat that made a noise.

  • @drseth00789 You might be able to rotate again and go for a leglock too. As long as you can keep your hips above his he'll have difficulty taking your back with you sitting on top of him. Of course rolling to the side gives you better back attack options if you want to transition from a single leg ride to getting both hooks in to work a reverse stretcher ride.

  • @KJGould if the guy throws his leg over, he still has to remove the other to be in backwards mount. if that leg is still in half guard, it shouldn't be hard for the bottom guy to just take the back. that or do some of bravo's stuff

  • lol it sounded like he farted at the begining

  • Who farted at 1:47 ? Lol

  • I really like this drill. Thanks for posting. My instructor prefers a different leg position though, one where you cross your ankles and scissor your legs like the lockdown.
