Despite what most people think the felt recoil from a .50 BMG rifle isn't that bad, due in part to the rifle's impressive weight (almost 30 pounds with scope.) The large six-gill muzzle brake, however, is what makes this gun tolerable by negating about 90% of rearward acceleration.

The drawback to this brake is that it drasitically increases report volume and muzzle blast pressure, especially on the sides of the gun. Even several feet behind the gun you can feel the shot not only through a sharp overpressure wave in the air but through the ground as well! We often double our ear protection from just earplugs when firing, adding muffs as even -33db rated foam inserts aren't enough.
