Some honorable Morgantown Police Officers received promotions, commendations, and awards for their heroic work to help the residents of Morgantown!

From a Morgantown Police Department Press release:

Officers of the Morgantown Police Department recently received awards and promotions following an awards presentation by the Morgantown City Council on November 1, 2011.

Officer Kenneth W. MURPHEY was promoted to Patrolman First Class Officer MURPHEY has been a member of the Morgantown Police Department since October of 2008 and is currently assigned to the Operations Division. Officers are eligible for promotion to Patrolman First Class after they have completed their sixteen (16) week Basic Law Enforcement Training, successfully completed sixteen (16) weeks of Field Training, and worked as a solo officer assigned to a patrol shift for three (3) years. Officer MURPHEY is a graduate of East Fairmont High School, located in Fairmont, WV. He attended the West Virginia University School of Engineering from 2005 -- 2006 and attended the Criminal Justice Program at Fairmont State University from 2006 -- 2007.

Patrolman First Class Lawrence HASLEY was awarded the Medal of Valor and the Lifesaving Medal for his heroic acts of June 24, 2011 where he, while off duty, observed a distraught woman preparing to commit suicide by jumping off of the I-68 overpass. Officer HASLEY turned his vehicle around and approached the woman, initiating dialogue in order to prevent her from harming herself. Officer HASLEY, without hesitation, safety equipment or assistance approached the woman while engaging her in dialogue in order to move her away from the edge of the overpass. He was able to get the woman off of the edge of the overpass by sitting down beside her while talking to her.

Patrolman First Class William RUNYAN was awarded the Medal of Valor and the Lifesaving medal for his heroic acts of March 22, 2010 where he, along with Officer TEETS of the Star City Police Department entered into a residence without any protective gear, that was fully engulfed in fire, pulling a citizen from the house to safety and performing emergency first aide.

Lieutenant Michael LANTZ, First Sergeant Scott CARL, Sergeants Robert GILMORE and Bryon HENNESSEY were awarded the Medal of Valor and the Lifesaving Medal for their heroic actions of October 18, 1997 where they responded to a Structure Fire as a result of a Domestic Dispute on Ridgeway Avenue. When the officers arrived they found an apartment building had been set on fire as a result of the domestic dispute. Officers, without protective equipment entered the burning building and found occupants that were in their apartments unaware of the smoke and fire danger because they were asleep and removed them to safety.
