@doctormccorm I'll try that!! how bout glass marbles??

Would have been nice to actually see it shred something.

@davetileguy my thoughts again! I wasn't sure if excavator tips were just carbon steel or if I would need carbide tips which I noticed you can buy in all shapes and sizes,SOO how about using old truck brake rotors(already made and hardened) somehow weld 4 to 5 studs to accept carbide tips or bucket tips, lastly a hydryaulic pump for a 250 hp 454 might be spendy, how about a heavy duty truck trany with a big flywheel? thanks for your time!!

thats cool.

sweet! I want to build a machine out of local materials to shread pallets, wood chippers aren't designed for nails and pallet chippers are $100,000!! theres got to be something in between,I'd like to use a big block v-8 and probaly a slow speed crusher like yours, any Ideas?
Thanks

@davetileguy I would guess that hydraulics would be your best bet for a low speed crusher of that size. drive the pump with the V8 and use hydraulic motors to drive the crusher rotors, that way they can be direct drive, the engine can sit on its power band all the time, and the hydraulic valve block can vary the speed and direction of the rotors.
SSI Shredders pretty much have the design nailed, all you need to do is copy the basic principal of it.

@Aussie50 exactly my thoughts,I wanted to copy the SSI but there looks to be a lot of machined hardened carbon steel, the hammel looks easy to reproduce,I see the advantage of a slow turning crusher being that I wouldn't have to balance a multi ton mass of spinning steel, last there's the auger type which I could modify an existing auger bit,or make my own

@davetileguy your dead right about the low speed balance issue!, there isn't one!
Most of SSI's machines are made to cut really thin stuff so that's not really relevant when you just want to smash pallets.
I would start with solid shafts and weld the cutters on like on the SSI Primax. have staggered cutters with deep roots that coincide with fixed anvils in the hopper, and tip them with good steel that you can build up with face-hardening welding rods. or use existing excavator bucket tips.
