Asteroid near miss in March 2009, Asteroid defense is needed

In March 2009 a small asteroid nearly hit earth. Could a larger comet or asteroid hit earth causing a Doomsday event?
Its recommended that an asteroid defense for earth be built, and this would be a great economic stimulus project.
