The plague is thought to have been endemic in the Himalayan foothills between China and India, one theory is that Mongol troops brought the disease back with them after military campaigns in the area and that's how it spread across the steppes from Mongolia to Kaffa in the Crimea - from there and possibly via other ports it came to Europe.
