what kind of sound are you looking for?
these are what I'm sure many bassists consider as "classic" bass guitars with of course their "classic" tones/sound.
fender jazz bass
fender precision bass
rickenbacker 4001 or 4003
musicman stingray
I have played and owned all of these except a rickenbacker 4001, which is basically the old version of the rickenbacker 4003 model. never played a hofman though, never seen one in real life too, i live in the PI so it is very rare here.

@Cockoblock .........Thats how Hofners are that explains Pauls style, with flats you really lose sustain, I have 2 hofners 1 with round wounds and 1 with flats. Hofner is a nice bass but depending on string types it changes your style of playing
