The entire community turns out to decorate the temple and make offerings to the gods. Thousands are made, and none are made to last. There are strict rules as to which types should be made for a given event, and how many are required.

There's something appealing about the purposelessness of it all. I guess we have ours too, with our weddings and football games, but it seems like they are closer to it than us! Really hard for me to imagine it in my workaday world, goal-oriented, efficient, busy accomplishing.
