Yes this is quite reminiscent of Callas, who thought very higly of Caballe. THere is an interview of Callas floating around on youtube, where when asked about who would carry the bell canto torch-so to speak- Callas replied "of course Caballe..."

Caballe was born to sing "qui la voce"!

her voice is so soulful...beautiful

I can't believe she recorded this so late in her career! Its a good thing Muti had her do it before it was too late. I appreciate her artistry and think that this was good for her to go back to a bel canto role especially since she was in the middle of doing all those verisimo roles! this proves that with the technique, you can sing anything and make it beautiful without all the high notes! thank you

She has never sung it on stage. Muti asked her to record the whole opera. It was in 1979 when she already was singing heavy roles like Turandot or Gioconada and nobody was sure about the success of Caballe as Elvira, but it was well accepted in the end. But I have to say - even if her performance is not bad, too late... And the role does not suit to her. It needs higher soprano. Ideal were Sutherland, Gruberova...
Qui la voce sua soave... Indeed. Like Callas before her, Caballé imbues the text with enormous feeling and meaning. An example is the phrase "Egli piange, forse amò," which is heartbreaking. Her astonishing breathing technique is not used to show off, rather it enhances the legato required by this cavatina. Simply marvelous.
