This is my first solar powered robot. It is based on the FLED solar engine schematic from http://www.beam-wiki.org/wiki/FLED-based_Solar_Engine

The vibration is coming from a small pager motor. The solar cell charges the capacitor until the FLED reaches it's internal switching voltage. This discharges the capacitor and provides the burst of energy to the pager motor. The only thing I wish I would have done differently is to get a larger pager motor for more pronounced vibration. The motor I used was 4mm diameter X 8mm long. Maybe for my next project.

The solar cell was purchased through www.solarbotics.com

  • That's cool. You should have taken a time-lapse video of its construction, too :) So what's next on the list of analog-circuitry robots?

  • Next is another bug based on this same circuit, but with a different look. After that I am also looking into doing a 2 engine sollar-roller.
