Interview with Emory Voice Center patient Karon Schindler. Schindler had an operation on her neck that left one of her vocal chords paralyzed. For years afterward, she had a scratchy voice, found speaking exhausting, and had a hard time being heard. Doctors at the Emory Voice Center were able to restore her voice; although Schindler still has a paralyzed vocal chord, she can speak loudly, sing, and no longer has to dwell on her voice. Schindler tells her story.

Good for you! Congrats on getting your voice back! It's VERY isolating when all of a sudden you can't communicate to anyone the way you're used to.

I lost my voice about 17 years ago due to a similar tumor and had an implant. I have been working on my voice since then. I still have problems being heard. I don't know your whole story, but it sound like you had an implant that was incorrectly placed and then you got a another? I may look into that myself.

    God bless!

  • ive had paralyzed vocal cord since i was 2 years old. my right vocal cord got paralyzed when i had a tracheostomi. becouse i had problem with breathing. my question is do they have to make a cut in the neck to put it there?

  • it is a silastic implant. The implants have been around for some time, but the knowledge of where to place them has been refined in recent years.

  • I've had a paralyzed vocal chord since birth, what's the name of this procedure?
