It is very important to work your lower back muscles when trying to tone your mid section as focusing too much on your abdominals can leave you with an imbalance. A lot of core exercises (ie The Plank) work the unit as a whole which is the best way to do things. However, if you want to specifically work on your lower back then this is the place to start.
1) Lie on your front with your hands by your side.
2) Lift your chest and shoulders off the floor and feel the contraction in your lower back.
3) Dont strain your neck by looking too far forward, try and keep your focus on the floor.
4) Lower back down to the floor.
There are three variations of this exercise in terms of difficulty. Starting with the easiest:
1) Arms by your side.
2) Hands by your temples.
3) Arms stretched out in front of you.
