James P. Johnson, master and virtual inventor of Stride piano. This is a recording from 1921 of his famous Carolina Shout, a work which helped to define what Stride Piano actually was all about. This 1921 version differs from the more famous 1944 version, in being closer to ragtime in its rhythms, and more straightforward in its melodic outlines.
