Happy New Year 5769 from Berlin!

A heartfelt and touching performance of the Israeli song - Yerushalaim shel Zahav (Jerusalem of Gold) - written by Naomi Shemer. Live from the Cafe Grundgehalt with Amadea (Mezzo-Soprano) and Luba Gorelik (Piano).

Here is an English Translation of the lyrics:

The mountains' air clear like wine and the smell of pines,
Flies in the wind of the twilight with the voice of echoes,
And in the deep sleep the tree and stone rest in a dream,
The city which in life sits and its heart is within a wall.

CHORUS:
Jerusalem of gold and of brass and of light,
There is nothing like your song, "I am a violin."

We return to the cisterns of water to the market and to whatever,
The Shofar calls in the mountain of houses in the old city,
In the caves which are forever remembering thousands of sunsets,
And again falling asleep at the sea of the Kings on the way to Jericho.

CHORUS.

Surely I am coming to sing to you today for you bind circles,
I was made smaller from the marching of your sons and from the last of our enemies,
Because your name is burning in our consciousness like the kiss of an angel,
With the peacefulness of Jerusalem there will be happiness for the wholeness (completeness) of gold.

CHORUS

September 2008.

  • this is beautiful =)

  • Very nice. Hope you can find a piano next time.

  • I love this song. I discovered it on a catholic french radio in 1991/92, but found its meaning only 10 years later. It can be heard at the end of the "Schindler list".

Someone told me it was very nationalist, because of the period it was written, but for me, it is first a fine testimony of someone's love for her country. You sing it with ....passion in a very communicative way.

  • It's Hebrew.
