Aboriginal Peoples Television Network National News, August 25, 2009-Indigenous Tar Sands Campaign Feature.
(London, UK) August 28, 2009 - Five indigenous representatives from Canada's First Nations will be joining the Climate Camp this month in London (UK) to stop the Tar Sands development in Alberta.
The Tar Sands are violating our Aboriginal and Treaty rights in so many ways. We are seeing a terrifyingly high rate of cancer in Fort Chipewyan where I live. We are convinced that these cancers are linked to the Tar Sands development on our doorstep. It is shortening our lives. That's why we no longer call it 'dirty oil' but 'bloody oil'. The blood of Fort Chipewyan people is on these companies' hands. said George Poitras, a former chief of Mikisew Cree First Nation.
Although the Tar Sands are happening in Canada, they are also being driven from London's Square Mile. Shell is heavily committed, and BP took a significant stake in 2007. Both companies are financially backed by pension funds from the UK. Meanwhile London's investment banks, such as Royal Bank of Scotland and HSBC, have helped finance a wide range of Tar Sands projects. This has prompted Canadian First Nations to begin forging partnerships with UK campaigners, to internationalize their campaign for a complete Tar Sands moratorium.
***Post Far and Wide*** The visit is being coordinated by Indigenous Environmental Network, in partnership with people from the Camp for Climate Action. The group will spend a week at the London Climate Camp, which runs from 27th August to 2nd September. They will run workshops and plan anti-Tar Sands actions with UK campaigners.

@makinamill yeah i say stick it to the profiteers who made the brides and mess, deformed fish, not the taxpayers for "greenwashing" later bundled into a clean energy bill, that's bologna!

Energy Oil Producing Industries need to be made accountable for each project they come into contact with becuase this becomes thier ticket to "continue". This is not the case today where industry is left practically on thier own by paying off thier own experts to sign off on "liciences" or energy boards. We live in a closed off society where money controls decisions and this causes a destablization effect where local communities are closed off. We need to change this for our future generations
