Hawaiian Kava with Leija, Felipe & Pomai :)

Mahalo! Hello my wonderful youtube friends! Felipe and I arrived on the Big Island of Hawaii a couple days ago. We'll be here for at least a month and a half, volunteering on an organic farm that grows primarily an assortment or greens (kale, lettuce, bok choy, etc). Felipe and I explored the city Hilo the other day, which is about a 25 minute drive from the farm we're located at. We came across this Kava bar and thought we'd try it! This video features our new friend Pomai who works at the bar. She was nice enough to allow us to film her talking about kava, which is a root found in the South Pacific. Kava is traditionally consumed as an herbal tea, produced by straining a mixture of water and shredded, dried, pounded or fresh root and/or stump. It may also be chewed as part of preparation. Kava is consumed during various Hawaiian ceremonies and rituals. It is used by some Hawaiian healers to help clients/ patients reduce anxiety, cure insomnia, counteract fatigue, treat asthma, arthritic pain, and urinary difficulties. Kava is also used recreationally and at social gatherings! The effects of drinking kava include slight tongue and lip numbing due to the contraction of blood vessels in these areas, an overall calming effect, sense of well-being, clear thinking and relaxed muscles. From my experience, the effects were similar to the effects of drinking alcohol yet I was completely coherent, with no slurred speech, or anything, and I slept peacefully that night with no hang-over the next day! Woohoo!!!

OMG so excited for you guys I used Kava as a sleep aid for a while, always did the trick, didn't know it was ceremonial, makes total sense. Would love to see some outdoor footage of your new surroundings, yo!
