"Ricordati, mio ben"
from Handel's opera Flavio, re di Longobardi (HWV 16)

performed by Renata Pokupić & Hilary Summers (as 'Vitige' and 'Teodata') with the Early Opera Company under Christian Curnyn from a recording of the full opera available from Chandos.

Handel's fourth full-length opera for the Royal Academy of Music, "Flavio" premiered in London at the King's Theatre in the Haymarket on May 14, 1723. The cast included Cuzzoni as 'Emilia,' Senesino as 'Guido,' Durastanti as 'Vitige' and Anastasia Robinson as 'Teodata'.

Libretto by Nicola Francesco Haym:

Duetto:

Vitige e Teodata:
Ricordati, mio ben,

Teodata:
che se da me tu parti,

Vitige:
che se da te io parto,

Vitige e Teodata:
 io vivo sol con te.

Vitige:
Già teco resta il cor

Teodata:
Già meco resta il cor

Vitige:
 in pegno del mio amor,

Teodata:
in pegno del tuo amor,

Vitige:
di mia costante fè.

Teodata:
di tua costante fè.

Vitige e Teodata:
Ricordati, ecc.
(Partono.)

Duet:

Vitige and Teodata:
Remember, my darling,

Teodata:
that when you're parted from me,

Vitige:
that when I'm parted from you,

Vitige and Teodata:
I live for you alone.

Vitige:
Yet my heart will remain with you,

Teodata:
Yet your heart will stay with me,

Vitige:
as a token of my love,

Teodata:
as a token of your love,

Vitige:
and my constant faith.

Teodata:
and your constant faith.

Vitige and Teodata:
Remember, etc.
(They exit.)

  • What a feast for the eyes in terms of fashion: all those satin dresses! Pio Ricci's art has recorded a century or more of fashions: the very intricate, wide starched collars of the Elizabethan period are replaced by open necks for women and lace in front for men. It makes me want to learn more about his art.
