Beavertail cactus (Opuntia basilaris).
This low, spreading cactus with short bristles grows on dry, rocky desert slopes. It grows 6 to 12 inches high and up to 6 feet wide. Brilliant red-to-lavender flowers 2 to 3 inches wide with many petals bloom March to June. The gray-green, jointed stems are wide and flat resembling the tail of a beaver.

  • Beautiful!! I keep smaller forms- from Silver Peak and Tonopah, NV- in Bucharest, Romania, and they are hardy to almost -30degC if protected from moisture. Still small, but I can't wait for flowers!

  • Nice! Thx!
