Ice jams happen every year along Cazenovia Creek in South Buffalo, but they always draw crowds, including camera toting shutter bugs who never tire of seeing the force of nature.
It is especially exciting for those who happen to be in the right place at the right time to see an ice jam suddenly break, sending cascades of water and ice moving swiftly down stream.
Such was the case shortly before 5pm when police suddenly ordered bystanders off the the Stevenson Street Bridge, after learning an ice jam which had built up for three days near Leydecker Road in West Seneca had broken, and was making its way down the creek.
The gathered crowds weren't disappointed when just 15 minutes later, with a noise that some described as sounding like a freight train, a massive torrent of ice and logs came barreling into South Buffalo .
Some bystanders actually cheered the massive flow, which subsided about 30 minutes later with an eerie silence, and left car sized chunks mounded up along the banks of the creek.
With concern over potential structural damage to the bridge, officials ordered it shut down until it is safe for engineers to inspect beneath it. That may not occur for several days.
"I've been watching things like this for 40 years, but it never ceases to amaze me," said South Buffalo resident Jack Higgins.
Kat Scienski, who was visiting from Michigan, was similarly awed.
"I think this is absolutely amazing!," she exclaimed adding, "I usually go to Niagara Falls to see something this exciting. This is really great."
