Croce wrote the song in early 1973 when he arrived home and got into a disagreement with his wife, Ingrid. Instead of arguing with her, Ingrid has stated that Croce "went downstairs, and he started to play, like he always did when he wrote...the next morning, he came up early in the morning and sang it to me. ~wiki

Thanks John. It's good to know the history behind great songs like this. His songs are simple genius. I'm sorry he's gone, but I'm also glad we've got what we do of his.

No need to apologize unless you're a part of the problem, but thanks sweetheart.
P.S.: I hope you understand that when I say sweetheart I don't mean anything disrespectful. It's just that I recognize one when I see one. I can prove this because I married a sweetheart coming up on 24 years ago.

This song meant a lot growing up... being old school we were taught by our fathers to suck it up... rub dirt on it.... emotion is for sissy's.... girls... if you ever wonder the importance our moms have in our lives I'll tell you... they saw this... and they allowed us to be human...to feel without ridicule... and kept this secret from our fathers.... and yes... why we look for our 'moms' in the women in our lives.... those we can trust enough to let our guard down and still feel like men
