Between starring in Hollywood films in the early Thirties, Maurice Chevalier had ample time to record many of the era's most popular songs. Here's his take on Harry Richman & Irving Kahal hit tune:

MOONLIGHT SAVING TIME

Birdies fly with new ambition
spring is in their song
soon you'll yourself a wishin'
days were not so long
If my thought is not defined
listen while I speak my mind:

There ought to be a Moonlight Saving Time
so I could love that girl of mine
until the birdies wake and chime
Good morning!

There ought to be a law in clover time
to keep that moon out overtime
to keep each lover's lane in rhyme
till dawning
You'd better hurry up, hurry up, hurry up
get busy today
you'd better croon a tune, croon a tune
to the man up in the moon
and here's what I'd say:

There ought a Moonlight Saving Time
so I could love that girl of mine
until the birdies wake and chime
Good morning!

There ought to be a moonlight saving time
so I could love that girl of mine
until the birdies wake and chime
Good morning!

  • RR Mon Ami,

This Moon song is tres tres FABULOUS and so is Maurice. I love this song (one of the best ever written) and I especially love it with the French accent...so Romantic and Continental. Merci.

  • You're entirely welcome, Genia--one of Chevalier's non-film songs that attained smash success...I'll be posting more his tunes.

    Adieu,

    -RR

  • Maurice Auguste Chevalier (September 12, 1888 January 1, 1972) was a French actor, singer, and popular entertainer. Chevalier's signature songs included "Louise", "Mimi", and "Valentine". His trademark was a boater hat, which he always wore on stage with his tuxedo thanks fir the ppost rr great upload

  • Thanks for that bio, Paul--yes, this is one of those rare photos where maurice is wearing a silk topper rather than his trademark boater. ;)

    Yuletide felicitations, my Brit friend!

    -RR
