A cool looking & sounding aircraft, an Il-62 landing at LAX. You're at a great angle to see the reverse thrust deploy while still in air.

  • @maxhovid, that's cool. Thanks for watching and I'm sorry!

I rarely use the intro but once in a while I throw it in to show newer subscribers that I have a rare video of an ex-TWA CV-880 departure on the channel.

  • This is great. But I am wondering if the people in the last rows are still able to hear anything after such a long flight from Poland.

  • @Coaljet That's not the cause. Most of the eastern pilots deploys reverses when... they are on the position to overshot touchdown zone. You can see many movies with f.ex. Tu-154 with that kind of landing (reverses before touch down).

  • @Piotr3kM Definitely a weird design feature. Mind you, the DC-8 also was able to use engines # 2 & 3 in reverse mode in flight, as it lacked in-flight spoiler deployment capability. I think that you can get away with it with low-bypass engines, but I highly doubt that high-bypass fans could do this--they'd probably be shorn off! Also, the IL62 doesn't have leading edge slats, making the approach speed a tad higher than average, so the pre-touchdown reverse kind of makes sense--but it is weird!

  • RIP to the All souls who were taken from us when the aircraft crashed on approach to Warsaw.

  • Interesting, reverse before touchdown

  • used to see these fly over my house when they would fly into JFK back in the 80's- music to my ears!

  • I love this plane. Especially the engine sounds. BTW, Nice vid!

  • @alexcherezov plane are russian but it polish airlines , polish pilots and polish passangers :) merry christmas

  • Wow! Ilyushin's in the States!

  • Il-62 is one of a small handful of planes that can operate the TR's in flight. Used to decend rapidly without picking up speed, and during final/approach for same reasons. IIRC, while deployable in flight they are limited in how much throttle they can use. As you can imagine, just those buckets opening alone creates a huge amount of drag!
