Police officer attacked with hammer

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - A Northampton police officer suffered a head wound in an instance of New Years Eve violence that marred Northampton's First night celebration.

Northampton Police Lt. Michael Patenaude told 22News at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night two officers responded to a report of a burglary at YES Computers on 38 Pleasant Street.

Lt. Patenaude said the officers approached the building from different sides, and one of them struggled with a suspect who used a hammer as a weapon.

That officer suffered a head laceration. The officer was rushed to the hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening injury to his head.

Police arrested 22-year-old Garett Shaw, who gave an address of 12-A Randolph Place, Northampton.

Lt. Patenaude told 22News Shaw is being held on $10,000 bail, and faces arraignment in Northampton District Court on Friday.

Shaw is charged with breaking and entering in the nighttime, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and possession of burglary tools.
