yeah...if they didn't charge $500 labor/$1500 parts, that kind of thing could be MORE EASILY prevented....I love how mechanics always get on their soapbox and start saying how 'if only you had brought this into the shop earlier' all would be well....well, guys, you quote a $200 job into a $2500 one because you don't want to mess with it, and then wonder why no one wants to pro-actively bring their vehicle in...duh

  • Heck for what you would have to spend that GC isnt worth fixing

  • @dah5096 Dead on! I've owned a '98 ZJ and my Cherokee is far superior!!

  • thats why you don't get a grand cherokee. get the xj. it will never die

  • I hope this person wasn't in part time because thats a common mistake, which will lead to driveline binding.

  • I have this exact same trim color to the t, i have had a lot of issues with my transfer case. What i believe to be the viscous coupler not disengaging. I have found my own weird ways to force it back into 2wd by doing some tricks while driving. 1 Is driving on gravel, the idea is to get the wheels to be free, as in theory they are stuck together, so if i force the car to lose traction then it gives the car a chance to disengage without the pressure on itself.

  • I know on my Cherokee, my drive shaft broke. I spent $150 patching it and $2700 for a new shaft, rear output and suspension. It is better to get it done right... THE FIRST TIME! I would have spent $1500 for just the suspension!

  • Agreed

  • Looks like an IED did that!

You know, all it takes for a gearbox to become dry is to have an oil leak of two drops per day for a couple years.

  • this happened to me also on my 1999 Jeep Wrangler. I had been hearing a clicking sound coming from down under until my transfer case finally broke in half i couldnt believe it. Turns out the cause was my front driveshaft was worn and idk what it did to snap the case. But i got a new T-case from a friend for $140 so it was all fine :)

  • It was probibly the chain smaking the case that caused the noise
