From Fort William Railway Station, near Ben Nevis, Scotland, UK, take an 84 mile round trip to the fishing harbour of Mallaig on The West Highland Railway line. Enjoy a short stop at Glenfinnan Railway Station just after the Glenfinnan Viaduct where Harry Potter hangs on for dear life from the door handle of the Weasleys Ford Anglia motor car after it is almost crushed by the Hogwarts Express.

The Glenfinnan viaduct and parts of the route were used extensively in the filming of the "Harry Potter" films "The Chamber of Secrets" and the "Prisoner of Azkaban". West Coast Railway Company, operators of "The Jacobite", provided the carriages for the "Hogwarts Express" as seen in these films and in "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone".

Wonderful Scottish mountain scenery. At the short stop at Glenfinnan Railway Station, you may just have time to go down to Lochshiel for a look at the Glenfinnan Monument for the Scottish Soldier, commemorating the raising of Bonnie Prince Charlies Standard to rally the highland clans for the 1745 failed rebellion but you will have to be quick.

You get about an hour and a half at Mallaig where you can wander the harbour and maybe see some fish being unloaded.
Watch the seagulls battle with seals in a feeding frenzy for discarded prawns as the fisherman clean their catch.
Then get some lunch. There was a hotel overlooking the railway station that did a reasonably priced fish and chips.

If you get confused as readily as I do, you will notice that your ticket seat number has a different reference to the engine on each leg of the trip. Facing the engine then back to the engine. While you take in the sights of Mallaig, the engine is decoupled and goes to the other end of the train while the carriages maintain their orientation from Fort William to Mallaig.

  • Are there compartments that don't have tables in them???? I really want to know. I might be going soon and I would love a compartment without a table.

    .

  • @TheMundungusFletcher -- Sorry, I can't remember that. Even if I did, there is no guarantee that they still have all the same carriages. Try their official website.

  • If u knew even the slightest thing about British steam engines you would clearly see the the loco in Harry potter was great western and the one in your video was LNER.

  • @MrCreid1990 There you have it -- don't know the first thing about British steam engines -- but I have learned to live with that :)
