The coxwain's FIRST responsibility is to keep the crew safe. I have had about 6 significant crashes like this one in my rowing career of 10 years, I have never had one in a coxless boat as the responsibility is so great you MAKE SURE you aren't going to hit anything and think about it always, in coxed boats the coxwains seem to focus on yelling shit out to make them feel like they are part of the team. And not worry about their primary responsibility, which is steering the boat.
