The gun is capable of delivering aimed direct and indirect fire employing HE 120-mm Russian-made projectiles, and mines of both Russian and NATO standards. Consequently, the gun constitutes a hybrid of a howitzer and mortar that can provide fire support for mechanised infantry sub-units in all types of combat. The auxiliary weapon set comprises a 7.62-mm machine gun mounted on the turret roof, a smoke-screen system, as well as sighting and night-vision devices. Specialists throughout the world appreciate the need to equip high mobility combat units (paratroops, airmobile and naval infantry) with a powerful artillery system that can correspond to ways of their shipment and mobility in terms of their marching and maneuvering characteristics.

  • SSG 120 is light years better...

  • 0:34 Three Kings

  • @franknbeans4761 Amphibious AFV can have adequate protection since it can be till 25tons (or may be even till 30, as Patria APC). But for air-drop weight limitation is much more restricted (up to 13-14tons).

  • @BitnikGr Although this vehicle and many other Russian vehicles all have heavy firepower and are hard hitting on the battlefield, it is just a shame that they all are thinly armored. It is good to have them be able to be dropped with Airborne forces and be amphibious but it seems like it limits a majority of their vehicles. Mobility is good but at what cost?

  • @BitnikGr Interesting. Seems like a good weapons system with some armor limitations but can be very effective if applied correctly.

  • @franknbeans4761 Yes... and with Marines. Marines has 75 Nonas. Very few are in service of Border Guard Forces. And about 800-850 are in VDV and Infantry, with majority serving in VDV (3 brigades, 7-8 divisions).

  • @BitnikGr Yes I agree when you say it is best to have most systems such as this be on a heavier chassis just like the the M728 engineering vehicle with the 165mm demolition gun. But that is far too impossible for airborne forces and this would provide valuable firepower to them. Is it also in use with ground forces?

  • @franknbeans4761 ... and super-modern FCS system, electronics etc it became too damn expensive for Russian Army and they settled in compromised - 2S34 Hosta. The contradiction is that fire power is increased (despite it is less than in Vena), but protection was decreased even more, because it was placed on chassis of MTLB which has even less protection than BTR-D, on which Nona is based.

  • @franknbeans4761 True. Compared to StuG III, IS-2 (in role of assault artillery) and even to US engineering vehicle on base of M60 (with 160 or 165mm gun), Nona indeed is light protected.

Maybe assault artillery must be really heavy armored boxes, in order to deal with anything and absorb punishment. However, for Airborne Troops it can't be so heavy, cause it will not be dropable. Furthermore, Vena is based on BMP-3 chassis, which is more protected from chassis of Nona, but with BMP-3 chassis...

  • @BitnikGr the support it would require.

When it should be working with small units of mechanized infantry constantly moving and destroying position after position. Instead of being deployed with lighter airborne units or infantry units.
