I do not believe that they dug down to the suspected wooden chest, but rather drilled a hole. The "paper" was supposedly parchment. Parchment is made from animal skin that has been treated to create a smooth surface for writing. It is durable, flexible and easily rolled for transport, making it perfect for use as voyage charts. Parchment was often treated with mercuric sulfide, used as a preservative.
