The first aviator sunglasses were made by Ray-Ban for World War II pilots. These guys needed glasses similar to fighter pilot goggles that would eliminate sunlight and glare.

To pull this off, Ray-Ban designed the iconic tear drop frames to cover up the maximum amount of real estate around each eye.

General Douglas MacArthur put aviators on the map in 1944 when he made his triumphant return to the Philippines wearing a pair. Now, how's that for an endorsement?

Aviators made a resurgence in pop culture when Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer sported them in the 1980s action flick Top Gun. And, ever since then, they have been a mainstay in celebrity style and fashion.
