Getalis - Here's some science for you ...

Upon ingestion, aspartame is broken down into aspartic acid, aspartic acid methyl ester, and phenylalanine in the gut wall. The methyl ester is subsequently converted into methanol, which is oxidized to formaldehyde and formic acid in various tissues. Formaldehyde is known to form chemical adducts with nucleic acids and proteins. These adducts have been found to be difficult to remove by normal metabolic pathways; hence, accumulation may occur.

Sigh...

Your first mistake was naming "aspartic acid methyl ester" as a breakdown product, when it is in fact straight-up methanol.

Your second mistake was outright ignoring the fact that methanol is broken down into CO2 and water, both of which are exhaled within an hour of ingestion (as studies using radiolabelled C-13 have shown).

Your third mistake was ignoring the fact that the amount of methanol itself is miniscule, especially when compared to "natural" fruit juices!

So you think aspartame is safe? You know that 10 of the 11 board members for the FDA that approved it went to work for nutrasweet within a few months of the approval, right?

I'm throwing down the bullshit flag on this one. Name the names of the people you're referring to, and provide the source of this "information".

I'll be waiting, with popcorn and aspartame-sweetened Diet Coke™. ;-P

I'll track down that info for you. I have known 3 people in the last handful of years who got brain tumors. Guess what the first question all three were asked by their oncologist? You guessed it. "How much diet soda do you drink?". They also know for a fact that the original studies were 'at best sloppy' according to the FDA themselves. Then somehow it gets passed?

Yeah, right. I'll bet you were physically present at all three individual meetings with those oncologists. At best, you *might* have a few quacks pushing a pet grudge against aspartame, but that's all.

Aspartame is among the most thoroughly studied molecules in history, and every major study vouches for its safety. You just don't like those conclusions, so you reject them in favor of conspiratorial pap. Pathetic.

Plus, our grandparents could eat fried fatty foods and salt and sugar, because they worked out in "the field" all day. They worked it all off. We sit behind a desk all day and in front of a TV all night.

1) The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".

2) "How comes" the majority of "MS sick people" have eaten carrots at some point in their lives?

My turn:

Provide a plausible mechanism by which Diet Coke™ could cause multiple sclerosis.
