Patrick your mixing data recovery and data backup they are totally different things. Spinrite does not backup data but it will recover data so that it can be backup.

I had 2 sata hard drives die on me as well, and thinking about getting identical ones and replacing the circuit boards since nothing else has worked. Sucks tho, no backups to speak of.
