Part 2 of the engine knock series. I pulled the motor apart to find the source of the mysterious knocking sound and found bits of metal everywhere.

  • Before doghouse coolers the cooler sat in the cowling letting less cool air get to the #3 cylinder. That led to overheating and burned #3 conrod bearing. In the '70s I used to buy damaged engines cheap. The damage was always a burned #3 conrod bearing. The way to prevent it was to widen the valve lash in #3. Valves were adjusted to 0.04 in #1, #2 and #4 but was 0.06 in #3.

  • I had a '69 bug that developed a knock similar to yours, shortly after that it developed a large hole in the top of the case accompanied by a severe oil leak. Pulled the plug wire and drove it 25 miles home, and that was all she had. :(
