This is a replication of Jonny Davros circuit consisting of one MPSA06 transistor, a trigger coil and three aluminum trays or (pie plates). The input voltage is 11 volts supplied by a battery. The running current was 60ma. I used an old GM HEI ignition coil in place of the recommended 4kv trigger coil. The whine or whistle in the background is an AM pocket radio tuned out of band. By using the radio I was able to hear some of the oscillatory energy. I was working in the dark, so the video quality is poor, sorry about that!

  • Thanks Jonny. In my tests I got a 'feel' of the output by accident :-). I can attest that the output is of a lower frequency then an SEC and can be quite painful. This may be due to the large ignition coil I used in place of the samller trigger coil. Perhaps the smaller trigger type coils are the way to go for better SEC type effects. Either way, the circuit is interesting and rather efficient. Thanks again for sharing your ideas with all of us.

    I believe if you can up the voltage just a little bit, you can light the other half of that CFL. This happened to me in an earlier joule thief experiment. Once I got the voltage high enough, the entire CFL lit right up. (I thought at first I had a bad bulb or something.)

  • I worked on this yesterday in an identical way---using an ignition coil. Got mine to work on 5v by using a Darlington pair (two MPSA06) arrangement. I also got some nasty shocks. Ouch!
