Dr Ravish Patwardhan Saves a life from a Brain Aneurysm Rupture:
When Ms. Mary Young felt a "bomb" going off in her head, it was a true explosion of sorts, according to Dr. Ravish Patwardhan, the neurosurgeon who saw her in the emergency room. She had suffered a rupture of an aneurysm, and as Dr. Ravish Patwardhan investigated further using special testing, it appeared her aneurysm was in an unusual location: the posterior fossa. Her bleed was in the cerebellum, but Dr. Ravish Patwardhan noted no marked problem with her speech, coordination, or balance (which are areas that this affected region could control). Since she was awake, alert, and otherwise had only some headache and neck stiffness, Dr. Ravish Patwardhan discussed the options with her husband (who reminded him that she had three children, who needed to be cared for and needed their mother). Dr. Ravish Patwardhan also consulted with a neurointerventionalist to determine whether the aneurysm could be coiled. However, given the tortuous blood vessels and its location far along the blood vessel, a catheter could not be safely maneuvered to coil this, according to the consultant.
The next morning, as she and her husband were obviously concerned, Dr. Ravish Patwardhan and the operating room team wheeled Ms. Young to the operating room. With great care and using the benefit of the neuronavigation device in addition to the operating microscope, Dr. Ravish Patwadhan carefully dissected down to the blood clot, and was ready with a clip. He was ready to get "proximal control" as needed, if the aneurysm ruptured. Having planned this carefully, as the aneurysm ruptured, Dr. Ravish Patwardhan had identified its neck and placed the clip on the aneurysm, resulting in immediate cessation of bleeding. The life-threatening emergency had been averted for the time being, but the ultimate test would be how she woke up and functioned. In the recovery room, Dr. Ravish Patwardhan conveyed the news to her husband, who was relieved all had gone well so far.
Her post-operative course was amazingly fast. She made a complete recovery over the next several days to weeks, to the point of where she could go running again, as she was a very healthful person. Dr. Ravish Patwardhan conveyed to Ms. Young that she was very fortunate to have had sustained on clear identifiable problem despite having had an aneurysm rupture into her brain, a problem from which many people don't make a meaningful survival. Ms. Mary Young, a very giving individual, wanted to share her testimony with those who may benefit, considering such care, and Dr. Ravish Patwardhan has been grateful to her and her family for their trust and subsequent offer to help others.
