Seems like a lifetime ago...part of my "jazzer" phase, I guess. I arranged this Ron Carter tune for full jazz ensemble during a class taught by Steve Brown at Ithaca College in early '96. It's being played by a pick-up group of some of the excellent jazz talent at that college, who are sight-reading the score for the first time (no rehearsal). I'm playing bass on the track. Naturally, I couldnt resist putting some more esoteric sounds in the arrangement, which proved difficult to play on first try. I also quoted a couple other well known songs, which this one resembled, and made up a strange 3/4 version of a mambo rhythm. My favorite part is the change in "colors" at the end.
This photo was taken by a photography student of me back then. I played in both the IC Jazz Ensemble and the Vocal Jazz ensemble, as well as smaller groups. Even as early as high school, a music director had nicknamed me "I'm gonna be Charles Mingus if it kills me."
I'm building up a new playlist of diverse musical stuff I've done in the past. See it here, if you like:
