Get TCPMP ("The Core Pocket Media Player"), it is free and known as the best player around. There's a commercial version of it now, called CorePlayer but don't bother unless you got the money, it's just TCPMP with a skinned interface, whereas TCPMP is not skinned.

The player can do any format, I don't even have to recompress the movies I download. It does xvid/divx at dvd resolution easily. Just get a big storage card.

My storage card is a Hitachi 5Gb CF Microdrive, which can house 7-12 movies (7 at max quality, 700mb each, 12 when you get lower res movies at 300-400mb each).

When it comes to Skype, they have a Pocket PC client as far as I know. But you can't have it as a cellphone, you'd have too little coverage (WiFi) to receive calls all the time. Unless you plan to just use it in your house.

How did you get the Axim to work with external harddisk. I get the USB interface CF card has something to do with it, but what software are you using to get this to happen?
