This guy openly talked about cutting Education, and he is still considered presidential material!?

I don't support the GOP on a lot of issues, but I know that there are people who do, and as such I think there are some questions Mr. Perry should answer:

What did you mean when you said the "agency" of education would be "gone" when you are elected?

Don't people need to be educated for there to be a functioning democracy?

How do you think your decision to cut education will affect the American people?

  • Not that I agree with him, but he didn't say he wanted to cut "education", he said he would eliminate the DEPARTMENT of Education.

    Big difference.

  • @dsrtegl good observation. I figured that's what he was saying, but I probably should have phrased that better. :/

    Sorry if I wasn't clear.

  • Rick Perry and his ilk depend on an uneducated populace.

  • Unfortunately, the way our modern electoral system works, politicians who appeal to "the base" and to the "extreme wings" tend to win primaries. For the current GOP, IMO, that means teh crazy.

  • I dont think he really meant to close any departments, it just seemed he was jumping on the ron paul bandwagon as a spur of the moment idea. If he is, then maybe his reasons are the same as pauls, who explained why on the night.

  • I had that exact same thought. Since no one inquired him about it, I thought that there was more behind that statement instead just cutting education that I was unaware of.

  • I believe his thought -- which is common to all the Repubs who talk along this line -- is that education should be sole domain of the states and that the federal government should butt out, and that through "competition" between the states will force the education standard higher.

As I see it, though, all this means is that without a federal standard, all it will create will be vastly differing standards throughout the varying states, essentially locking those in poorer states out. Just MO.
