  • @proquaker Pankration never really died, it has always been practices by Greek people, even when the Romans conquered Greece. It had been modernized a little (as all martial arts have been to some extent) but most people have tried to get back to the roots of the art.

  • @MrElNuKe Tell that to Rome.

  • Oh, no. Again with this pankration shit. You cannot revive a martial art that is dead for thousands of years. You can only invent a new one and name it like the old one.

  • They used the same tactics, and got the same results (or lack thereof), as modern Coalition forces in Afghanistan. You can't use heavy metal again swift forces in wide open, firm ground....didn't our generals and politicians learn anything from the Crusades centuries ago, troops of Genghis Khan-who was constantly outnumbered by heavily armed and armored European knights and Persian heavy cavalry.

  • ...Muslim arrows punched through mail, which the knights were covered in and which was very heavy. Though their mail was of better quality than the mail of previous centuries, it still only offered protection that was marginally better than that of boiled leather (boiled leather is in fact better for stopping arrows when worn over a heavy silk vest)....they were the military elite of Europe in their time, but not one of the top 6 warriors of all time...IMHO.

  • Crusaders were ignorant and inflexible for the most part militarily, mail covered knights on large and strong but short winded horses, during the crusade and though the Templars were the elite-the Muslim cavalry rode circles around them on the open deserts of Judea and Syria, all the while loosing arrows from their composite bows, jabbing with lances and hacking with curved swords...using their hardy mounts, light but protective armor made from overlapping scales of boiled leather or iron.

  • @ljp200 it was a detachment of 300 spartans with 7500(give or take) other greeks. leonidas then had the greeks retreat because he knew it was a suicide mission. the rest of the spartan army and the other greeks then repelled the weakened persians after the 300 were slaughtered at the hot gates

  • the only good warrior, is one that has no desire for fighting, who can go back home to wife and kids, and peace, without being constantly weary of might be attacks.

regardless of code during war, because when you get down to it, its you vs the other guy.

  • I like how they are using 300 as an actual fact, in reality there were about 3000 Spartans, and some 1000 supporting units.

Still impressive against a army in the tens of thousands though
