Surf Ski Kayak Surfing in Hawaii

Surfing a wave in Waikiki, Hawaii on a sit-on-top surf ski kayak in 1995. My waterproof "helmet cam" was an 8mm camera in a Tupperware container bungeed to a bike helmet. It looked stupid and was top heavy, but it worked.

Many sit on top kayaks can traverse waves. Surf-skis, however, are long, narrow and round bottomed. Turning beyond 10 degrees perpendicular to the wave in these boats is unrecoverable from my experience. About 10 degrees takes full rudder to correct. You can't lean in a surf-ski, they are too narrow. My old boat was 19' long.

Nice video! Where the music kicks in and the video is sped up is a cool touch. I converted a waterproof box that my camcorder just fits in and mounted it to the back a canoe, and now on the back of my new kayak. Take a look.

I have an ouassou from bic and have gone 60 degreese from the perpendicular... these aren't straight waves though... ever been to tuckies in rhode island? it's the spot for some of the best kayak surfing... why? I won't reveal that... it's best to find out for yourself
