Did Eric Clapton Ever record Classical Gas? There is a common misconception that Eric Clapton arranged and performed this song, but Clapton has actually never recorded Classical Gas. The misconception may come from the fact that Eric Clapton was the musical director and played much of the guitar music in the movie “The Story of Us,” however, the version of Classical Gas on the soundtrack is from Mason Williams' 1971 album “Handmade

Its Mason Williams and no one else, from his album Handmade released sometime around 1972-73. People mistakenly think its Eric Clapton. I've loved this since 1968 when it won a couple of grammys for Mason.

Muy hermoso, este tema me encanta. Necesita la partitura o tablatura urgente! Ojalá puedan ayudarme.
-
So is it Knopfler or this Mason Williams playing there?
-
Neither Mark, nor Eric played this song albeit indeed both are able to play.
But great respect to Mason Williams who wrote and first performed this classic masterpiece. And this is also him to play right now.

Little history lesson on this song, Classical Gas. Written and performed Mason Williams with the intent of putting a little "gas" onto the fire of classical guitar, to reawaken it in culture. He sent it to a radio station who was supposed to play it on their classical channel, but mistakenly ended up on their rock DJ's desk and he mistakenly played it. It became a huge hit purely by accident. The rest is history.
